About the Bishop
A bishop is worth about 3 pawns.
- It slides any distance diagonally and can never leave the colour of square it starts on.
- Each side has a light-squared and a dark-squared bishop; together, "the bishop pair" covers every square and is a real advantage in open positions.
- A bishop blocked by its own pawns on the same colour is called a "bad bishop". Try to keep your pawns on the opposite colour.
- Bishops love long open diagonals, like the one from a1 to h8.
